We asked experts what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newbeauty.com\/skin-care-mistakes-causing-breakouts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">causes breakouts<\/a> on the neck and how to clear skin\u2014and the answers are a bit different for men and women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Featured experts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newbeauty.com\/doctor\/schlessinger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daniel Schlessinger, MD<\/a> is a board-certified dermatologist in Omaha, NE<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newbeauty.com\/doctor\/jhopkins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Janine Hopkins, MD<\/a>&nbsp;is a board-certified dermatologist in Hopkins Southlake, TX<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Neck acne in men<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Southlake, TX dermatologist Janine Hopkins, MD notes that acne on the neck for men is often a result of shaving that leads to perifollicular pustules and breakouts. Dr. Schlessinger agrees, noting \u201cfolliculitis, where hair follicles become damaged and inflamed, making them susceptible to bacterial infections\u201d is the most common perpetrator for neck acne among men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFolliculitis often resembles small, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newbeauty.com\/common-skin-conditions-on-skin-of-color\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">red, pimple-like bumps<\/a> that may or may not be pus-filled,\u201d explains Dr. Schlessinger. \u201cNot washing your neck thoroughly enough, especially after sweating, excessive friction from tight clothing, sitting in certain hot tubs, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newbeauty.com\/tips-for-ingrown-hairs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shaving irritations<\/a> can contribute to folliculitis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solutions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you are experiencing pimple-like bumps on your neck, a visit to a board-certified dermatologist is always a good idea. If it is folliculitis, a combination of prescription and at-home products may be needed to clear it up effectively,\u201d says Dr. Schlessinger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newbeauty.com\/male-skin-care-beauty-engine-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">male patients<\/a> having issues with neck pimples, I recommend washing with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newbeauty.com\/benzoyl-peroxide-benzene-safety-acne\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">benzoyl peroxide<\/a> cleanser before shaving, then using a shaving gel and clean razor,\u201d says Dr. Hopkins. After shaving, they should apply an over-the-counter astringent or calming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newbeauty.com\/antioxidant-products-for-mature-skin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">product with antioxidants<\/a> to help reduce inflammation and breakouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newbeauty.com\/laser-hair-removal-what-to-expect\/\">Laser hair removal<\/a> is also a good choice for these patients to eradicate unwanted hair growth on the neck so that they don\u2019t have to shave and deal with these post-shaving pimples,\u201d adds Dr. Hopkins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Schlessinger recommends <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/49NDqDt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLn Body Wash<\/a> ($36) for any folliculitis regimen. \u201cIt uses sodium hypochlorite, more commonly known as bleach, in a very sophisticated formulation that is gentle enough for the skin. It effectively cleanses skin and decreases the spread of bacteria without irritating or drying out skin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Neck acne in women<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The experts note that acne on the neck and jawline in female patients is often a sign of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newbeauty.com\/personal-day-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hormonal acne<\/a>. \u201cHormonal acne typically pops up in the lower half of the face and jawline and in some cases, may extend down onto the neck,\u201d says Dr. Schlessinger. \u201cFor these patients, I check their hormone levels and address any underlying issues such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newbeauty.com\/pcos-and-acne\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">polycystic ovarian syndrome<\/a>,\u201d says Dr. Hopkins, so be sure to schedule an appointment with a doctor if you\u2019re noticing neck acne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solutions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor the female patients, using cleansers that are medicated such as <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3Dn7wRY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLn hypochlorous acid face wash<\/a> ($35) or even prescription or medical grade glycolic and salicylic cleansers can help address the acne breakouts on the neck,\u201d says Dr. Hopkins. She also recommends anti-inflammatory antioxidants or a product with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newbeauty.com\/azelaic-acid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">azelaic acid<\/a> to help clear up the breakouts. Additionally, \u201cLight therapy is a good choice for treatment using red and blue LED medical grade lights that have been shown to be anti-acne and anti-inflammatory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTreating pimples on the neck is, for the most part, similar to treating pimples on the face or anywhere else on the body, with a big caveat. The skin on the neck is much thinner, so products that might be okay to use on your face could be too strong for the neck. Often, a gentle approach is best for thin skin on the neck,\u201d says Dr. Schlessinger. Therefore, Dr. Hopkins notes that while tretinoin and Retin-A based products are often an acne solution they can be too irritating on the neck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Schlessinger recommends <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lovelyskin.com\/o\/afa-clarifying-gel-cleanser\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">afa Clarifying Gel Cleanser<\/a> ($45) for anyone who experiences breakouts on the face, jawline or neck. \u201cIt contains exfoliating alpha and beta hydroxy acids to unclog pores and rid skin of excess dirt, oil, and any makeup that might have been applied down onto the neck.\u201d It also features \u201ca dermatologist-developed molecule that provides very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newbeauty.com\/gentle-exfoliators-for-mature-skin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">effective exfoliation<\/a> at a low pH, while also reinforcing the skin\u2019s moisture barrier for virtually no
