What does makeup primer do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Essentially, primer works to prep the skin for the next step, whether it\u2019s foundation, tinted moisturizer <\/a>or BB\/CC cream. Depending on your skin type<\/a> and the result you\u2019re after, primer makes life a little bit easier by smoothing out the skin\u2019s texture (i.e. filling pores or blurring lines), absorbing excess oil and shine, and, our personal favorite, helping makeup to last a little bit longer. Below, celebrity makeup artists answer our most pressing questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does makeup primer go on before or after moisturizer?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Which step does primer come in? \u201cAfter moisturizer<\/a>, but before foundation,\u201d says celebrity makeup artist Mai Quynh, noting that ensuring your skin-care products and primer work well together\u2014and better, yet, with your skin type\u2014is key. \u201cLayering a moisturizer<\/a>, primer and foundation may work really well on normal to dry skin, but it might be too much for oily skin types,\u201d says celebrity makeup artist Sonia Deveney. If this is the case for you, experiment. \u201cTry skipping the moisturizer altogether and just use a serum with the primer,\u201d suggests Deveney. \u201cRemember, the end makeup result will only be as good as the skin underneath,\u201d says Temptu global educator and artist Tanya Deemer. \u201cIf the skin is not properly prepped, the makeup won\u2019t look as flawless as it should.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How much makeup primer should I use?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It depends on the formula. For liquid primers, Quynh recommends a dime-sized amount; for thicker formulas, Deveney says a pea size will do the trick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are primers with silicone better?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Silicone<\/a> is great for smoothing the surface of the skin and creating an \u201cairbrushed\u201d finish, which is exactly why you can find it in a lot of makeup primers.\u00a0 However, Quynh says that using\u00a0too<\/i> much silicone can start to be an issue. \u201cIf you\u2019re applying skin care that has a lot of silicone and then a primer that also has silicone, they may not work well together and end up pilling or rolling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How should I apply makeup primer?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s up to you whether you apply with your fingers, brush or a sponge, but there are a few guidelines. \u201cA dry beautyblender would just soak up the product, not leaving a lot to actually apply,\u201d says Deveney. \u201cAnd a damp beautyblender would thin the product down. So if your specific primer is quite thick and you intend on thinning it out, go ahead, but I usually us a foundation brush or my fingers or both.\u201d On the other hand, Deemer says she\u2019s a big fan of applying most primers with a synthetic bristle brush. \u201cIt allows me to really work the product into the skin so that it actually works the way it is meant to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where do I apply primer?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It depends on the purpose of the primer. If your primer\u2019s main intent is keeping makeup in place, it can be used all over the face to help your foundation adhere better. However, if the bottle mentions pore-smoothing or line-blurring, read on. \u201cFor pore-blurring primers, I would concentrate on areas where large pores<\/a> are prominent,\u201d says Quynh. \u201cUsually that\u2019s the T-zone,<\/a> but sometimes it also includes the cheek area.\u201d For line-blurring primers, Quynh suggests applying around the eyes, forehead and laugh lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which primer should I use?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
